Moe Turrentine is the conductor and musical director of the Garrett
Community Concert Band. Moe brings to this position a life long
career involvement with band and orchestra organizations.
Moe, who holds a bachelor of music education degree from the
University of Miami and a Master of fine arts degree from the
University of Alabama, has many years of professional experience as
a music educator, conductor, band director, band adjudicator, and
consultant.
He
currently serves as executive director of the Virginia Music
Educators Association. He began his teaching career in 1960 in
Miami, was a high school band director in Georgia for ten years, and
was also employed by DeKalb Community College in Atlanta. He was
hired as a high school band director in Fairfax County, Va. in 1978,
and was named coordinator of fine arts for the Fairfax County school
system in 1986, a position which he held until his retirement in
1998. He was also an instructor of music at George Mason University
from 1999 to 2001.
As
executive director of the Virginia Music Educators Association, he
continues to serve as an adjudicator of concert bands, marching
bands, and orchestras in seven states. Moe is currently serving as
chairman of the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, and is a board member
for the Garrett Performing Arts Center. He is a past board member
of the Garrett County Arts Council.
All good
things have their down side. The band has gained a new and talented
conductor but has lost a loyal and dedicated member of the band’s
trumpet section of which he has been a member since 2003.
